What is bruxism/ clenching or teeth grinding?

Bruxism also known as clenching is a habit of grinding the teeth, a problem which many people have and usually remain unnoticed by many of them.

 

How will I notice if I am grinding my teeth?

This habit most commonly occurs during night, which eventually lead to symptoms like severe headache or Migraine, upper back or cervical neck pain, earache and sudden increase in sensitivity in teeth to hot and cold food stuff. The long-term consequences of this are severe wearing of teeth at very early age and clicking & pain in the jaw joint while opening your mouth. Can be determined by the patient if clenching occurred at day.

  • Trauma to joint jaw joint or teeth
  • Wisdom teeth in improper position, misalignment of teeth
  • Hereditary in family  

 

What is the treatment of bruxism?

Visit the dentist for thorough check up of joint, muscles and detection of cause, extent of wearing of teeth, bite check and evaluation of history of symptoms of patient

Detection of underlying cause and treatment including either wisdom teeth extraction bite correction or orthodontic correction of misalignment of teeth.

After proper treatment of cause, Prevention of grinding further can be ensured with dental splints.
